The Center for Spirituality at Work is an educational, charitable, and community-based nonprofit organization. Our mission is to unite diverse people for spiritual transformation and social justice. Our primary strategy
for effecting change puts the emphasis on mutually transformative relationships that engage people on the margins together with people of privilege in a shared project.
We recently celebrated our organization's 20th year! See our milestones here.
CFSAW's fifteen-month Formation Program for Spiritual Directors emphasizes a commitment to spiritual direction services and retreat services for people in poverty, in prison, in shelters, and in group homes. With over 20 years of serving people who struggle with significant trauma and who often suffer from mental illness and addiction, CFSAW provides service opportunities for spiritual directors in the prison setting, with at-risk youth, with people who are homeless, and with families in transition. Most recently, CFSAW's Second Responders outreach is developing an ongoing spiritual presence to people who have experienced trauma caused by either natural disaster or human violence.
Women in prison and during re-entry are among the most neglected members of our society. The Center for Spirituality at Work responds to their needs with Making Choices, a mentoring program that fosters the development of decision-making and life skills. Volunteer mentors are business and professional women who receive training and ongoing support in their important coaching role with women who are incarcerated or recently released. Beyond basic decision-making skills, the Making Choices program encourages personal responsibility, stronger families, social engagement and leadership development. Mentors and former offenders work together on public education programs and advocacy efforts. The impact of Making Choices is demonstrated in the 92% of graduates who have re-entered the community successfully, as gainfully employed and contributing members of society.
Through Spirituality in the Marketplace programming, the Center for Spirituality at Work provides workshops, keynotes, and retreats for businesses, nonprofits, churches and civic organizations. CFSAW's emphasis is on providing enriching, practical spirituality and work programming for organizations that serve marginalized populations or who are interested in the needs of people in poverty.
The Center for Spirituality at Work lives out a commitment to systemic change by providing educational and service opportunities that emphasize
- the inherent dignity of every person,
- the power of mutually transformative relationships for effecting social change,
- the insights and leadership skills in marginalized people for effecting social justice, and
- the capacity of the soul for turning suffering into life-giving energy that deepens compassion
and enables healing.
