How Making Choices Works

Making Choices CurriculumMaking Choices is a ten-week, structured course that takes place at Denver Women's Correctional Facility (DWCF) twice per year, in February - April (Spring Session) and September - November (Fall Session).

The course consists of:

  1. Weekly 2-hour classes taught by trained volunteer teachers using a nationally-recognized curriculum.
  2. Weekly 1-hour, individual mentoring sessions with a trained volunteer mentor. Using our structured curriculum, the mentor helps her partner relate the decision-making process to all her daily circumstances so that the skills are internalized and become her normal way of responding to difficult and challenging situations.

Making Choices offers each incarcerated student tools to:

  • Identify and acknowledge her feelings
  • Examine her self-image and recognize herself as a woman of worth and value
  • Change her responses to different situations (learning to decide vs. react)
  • Get in touch with personal values and set goals accordingly
  • Gain more control over her life in both immediate and long-term situations
