How Volunteers Fit In

Women wishing to become mentors or teachers for Making Choices receive training from both the Center for Spirituality at Work (CFSAW) and the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC). Application deadlines for new volunteers are in June (for fall session) and November (for spring session).

We are now accepting applications for the Spring 2017 session of Making Choices.
The deadline to apply for the Spring 2017 session of Making Choices is Wednesday, November 30, 2016.

CFSAW Training

CFSAW conducts volunteer training for new volunteers twice yearly, in January and August.

CDOC Training

The Colorado Department of Corrections requires two training sessions for new volunteers. View their 2017 training schedule here.

  • Basic Volunteer Training (8 hours)
  • Site orientation at Denver Women's Correctional Facility (2.5 hours)


Volunteering at DWCF

Teaching

The volunteer teachers conduct a 2-hour class each week in teaching teams of two teachers per class, ensuring a teacher to student maximum ratio of 1:6. The teachers also facilitate the graduation ceremony.

Mentoring

Each volunteer mentor meets with her incarcerated partner one hour per week throughout the ten-week course. The mentors also attend the graduation ceremony, where they conduct a closure session with their graduating partners.

Support for Volunteers

Ongoing individual supervision and group supervision/continuing education meetings provide support for mentors and teachers. All policies and regulations are outlined in the Making Choices Policy Handbook given to each volunteer.

Duration

Volunteers commit to serve for two ten-week sessions, which may be in one calendar year or spread over two years.
